Gulf States and Coronaviruses (July 16, 2020)

Online Seminar “Coronaviruses and the Middle East” (2nd session)

The spread of coronaviruses continues to gain momentum amid concerns about the possible arrival of a second wave. Especially among the oil-producing countries of the Gulf, the spread of infection after the month of Ramadan (fasting), as well as the collapse and slump in oil prices, has been a major economic blow. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia, which hosts the two holiest holy sites of Islam, has taken the unprecedented decision to stop accepting pilgrims from abroad during the month of pilgrimage, which begins in July.
The Persian Gulf oil-producing country is a partner on which Japan depends for 90% of its crude oil imports. In the current coronavirus disaster, what kind of economic and social damage have been caused in the oil-producing countries of the Gulf, which are extremely important to Japan not only in terms of energy supply but also in terms of security? What changes and developments are expected in the future, and how should Japan cope with them?
In this second online seminar, “Gulf States and the Coronavirus,” leading researchers from the Middle East Research Center of the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan, will present their views.
