Japan’s Energy Policy and the Arabian Peninsula (December 11, 2019)

2019 Public Seminar “History, Culture, and Society in the Arabian Peninsula” (11th session)

Japan relies on imports for the majority of its oil, and nearly 90% of its oil comes from the Middle East, especially from the Persian Gulf countries. Also, about 20% of natural gas comes from the Middle East. Although the share of petroleum in Japan’s primary energy supply has declined considerably due to the growing awareness of fossil fuels, the Middle East is still an extremely important region for Japan’s energy security.

This seminar will consider the relationship between Japan and the Arabian Peninsula with regard to oil from the Meiji Era to the present.
