Fast Breeder Reactor Fundamentals
FBR cycle use both plutonium as fissile fuel and fast neutrons to induce fission in comparison to LWR. This neutron spectrum enables the transmutation of new fissile plutonium from non-fissile uranium inside the core, breeding more fuel. FBR cycle also helps to stabilize dangerous fission products (FP) and minor actinides by transmutation.
Contribution to Energy Security
By generating new fissile material inside the reactor, FBR cycle enhances energy security and autonomy of a country by dramatically increasing the potential reserve of domestic nuclear fuel.
Reduction of radioactive waste
Volume of high level waste which consists of radioactive isotopes with extremely long half-lives (>10000years) can be transmuted to species with half-lives of only 200-300 years.
