Profile

Having worked for three years following my undergraduate studies at a non‐profit foundation that manages development assistance, I entered the master’s program on International Development Studies at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), Japan, where I first studied development economics. During the master’s program, I worked at the United Nations Development Programme Zambia Country Office for half a year. After obtaining the master’s degree, I was at crossroads about whether I should go back to work in aid agencies or continue with higher studies. I chose the latter because I felt a strong need to learn the analytical skills required to understand the factors behind development issues. Then, in 2003, I enrolled in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of California, Davis. I wrote a doctoral thesis on agricultural marketing systems in developing countries, which was theoretically and empirically based on fieldwork in Ghana, and obtained my Ph.D. in 2008. Coming back to Japan, I worked as an assistant professor at GRIPS between 2008-2012. I worked as an assistant professor at the Department of International Studies, the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, the University of Tokyo between 2012-2015 and as an associate professor between 2015-2020 and have been a professor since 2020. I aim to conduct research that bridges the gap between practice and academia.
