Tribal Society and Politics in Oman and the Northern Emirates of the UAE (June 5, 2019)

2019 Public Seminar “History, Culture, and Society in the Arabian Peninsula” (2nd session)

Historically, several small tribal political coalitions existed from Oman to the UAE, but in the process of modern state-building, each state was formed based on the identity of each tribe, which led to the drawing of intricate border lines with a succession of enclaves. However, politics based on tribal society has given rise to new political problems such as the fluidization of borders as tribal ties fade away.

This seminar examines the relationship between tribal societies and politics in Oman and the UAE to examine the problems associated with the practice of democracy.
