Renewal of Contract

Your employment agreement may be renewed. If the agreement is renewed, it will be done every three years. Renewal of the agreement will be determined by the following factors: All relevant factors, such as progress of the work assigned to you, your performance, work record, and attitude, your medical conditions, budget status, and/or the amount of the work at the end of the term.

Contents of Work Duties

  • 1) Teaching responsibilities: Seven 105-minute (or 90-minute) classes per week, including classes for English language courses in the Junior Division of the College of Arts and Sciences (first- and second-year undergraduate students), and English language courses, content-based courses and thesis writing in the Senior Division (third- and fourth-year students). The University of Tokyo has two 13-week semesters per year.
  • 2) Other duties relating to the operation of the Department of English Language.

Working Hours

Discretionary work system for professional work applies and working hours will be deemed as 7 hours and 45 minutes per day.

Days off

Saturdays, Sundays, Holidays, and the year-end and New Year holidays (December 29 to January 3)

Leave

Annual Paid Leave, Special Leave, etc.

Wages, etc.

Annual Salary System applies and monthly paid salary will be around JPY 600,000 including performance / achievement allowance. (The salary will be decided taking your qualifications, capacity, experience etc. into account. Commuting Allowance (basically up to JPY 55,000)

Insurance

You will be automatically enrolled in the insurance from the Mutual Aid Association of MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) and Employment Insurance.

Qualification Requirements

  • 1) Native speaker of English, or with an equivalent level of proficiency.
  • 2) Specialist in humanities or social sciences.
  • 3) Ph.D. or equivalent academic qualification in the relevant field.
  • 4) Previous experience of teaching English at universities preferred.
  • 5) Ability to teach Advanced Academic Writing preferred.
  • 6) Elementary knowledge of Japanese preferred.

  • 3) List of publications (by category: books, articles, etc.).
  • 4) Three major publications (1 copy of each; photocopies are accepted).
  • 5) Description of the applicant's approach to teaching of English (approx. 500 words in English on A4 or letter-size paper).
  • 6) Contact details for two academic referees.

Application Deadline
