The Funding Program for World-Leading Innovative R&D on Science and Technology (FIRST Program*) was created as a "researcher driven" research support system with the purpose of strengthening Japanese global competitiveness and underlying strength in the areas of industry and security over the mid to long term while sharing the benefits of these research and development activities with the Japanese people and society. This will be achieved by promoting cutting edge research targeting global top performance in three to five years in a variety of fields and stages of research and development extending from basic research that creates new knowledge to research and development activities with a clear outcome.
There were 565 applications from across the country (428 of which were university related). 30 of these were selected and our research was one of these.
