タイトル:Shedding Light on Bacterial Electrophysiology: Towards Bio-Electrical Conceptualisation of Cells

Bioelectrical signalling, once thought to be unique to nerve and muscle cells, is widespread throughout living forms. Bioelectricity has the potential to offer a physiological framework for understanding and engineering diverse cellular processes, which may complement the genetic paradigm. In this context, we are particularly interested in bacteria as the model system. In fact, it has been shown that bacteria can show nonlinear dynamics, such as spiking and rhyth-mic oscillation, in their membrane potential. However, electrophysiology has been and still is an alien concept in microbiology and still little is known about bacterial electrophysiology. In this talk I will outline our recent efforts to modu-late bacterial membrane potential using light and electricity. I will also discuss the potential application of electrical stimulation for tacking antimicrobial resistance.
