Mechanism that discriminates species

Do you know what a "species" is?

The diversity of species on earth has been created through a process of speciation.
Species here refer to a reproductively isolated population, and organisms have evolved reproductive isolation mechanisms over and over again.
In plants, on the other hand, rare examples have been found of plants overcoming this reproductive barrier and flexibly accepting the genome of a different species to give rise to a new species.
For example, bread wheat, one of the most important crops in the world, is said to have been created by the hybridization of two different species.
Therefore, the genes that govern plant species boundaries are important and of tremendous agronomic and scientific value.

We have recently discovered a new molecule called Stigmatic Privacy 1 (SPRI1).
SPRI1 is a protein that functions in the pistil, and disruption of this gene causes pollen of different species, which should not enter in the wild type, to elongate in the pistil as shown in the photo.

This is the first time in the world that a gene that functions in discriminating between different species and the same species has been found.

This research result has been recognized in the general society and has been covered by the media, such as newspapers.
We believe that there are many more factors involved in this mechanism, and we are currently searching for them.

In addition, our research in these areas also includes applied research on crops because it leads to the development of basic technology for the cultivation of diverse and new varieties that are necessary for a sustainable society.
