【1/13】A Certain Methodology for Academic Writing — Theory and Practice of Description

This workshop is designed for undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in methods for writing papers and reports. Using Western artworks as examples, participants will have hands-on experience with the method known as “description”.

“Description” refers to succinctly and objectively explaining the subject or phenomenon under consideration, typically at the beginning of an academic paper.

Although the workshop content will focus on art history, the method is applicable to a wide range of fields in the humanities and social sciences. We welcome participants from diverse academic backgrounds.

TAs part of the Peer Support Team’s initiatives under the Academic Support Program, we are pleased to invite graduate students from the four humanities departments of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences to the following online event.

This workshop is an introductory seminar on scientific writing, led by Lecturer Tomoko Kamishima, who has conducted research in physiology for over 30 years in English-speaking countries. The seminar will cover both immediate actions and long-term strategies to help ensure that your research results are published in reputable academic journals. You will learn the fundamentals of academic writing in Japanese, and how to write clear and reader-friendly papers from the perspective of peer reviewers, using concrete examples.

At Writing Café, we host monthly Zoom events where participants write their academic papers together. Starting next month, we are launching a special edition: a reading group focused on books related to academic writing.
For our first session, we will read and discuss Kodai Abe's “A Completely New Textbook on Academic Writing” (published by Kobunsha).
