9.Civic action to open data
Use of driving data
The city established DATA for CITIZENS as a foundation in 2011 to promote the use of big data and open data. This foundation enables a wide range of data to be made available to the public, including data regarding driving position and acceleration rate, as recorded by sensors installed on the city’s road surface condition survey vehicles and public buses.
We are looking for various insights and ideas derived from such data, including “identification of potential hot spots” and “driving/routing patterns of road surface condition survey vehicles” to publicize effective use of such data within and outside the local government and encourage further use of open data.

4.Environment, energy
Waste reduction
The city is promoting waste reduction and recycling under the Basic Plan for General Waste Disposal (hereafter, the Basic Plan) to hand over the livable city to future generations through the effective use of limited resources.
We have been working on various activities focusing on promotion of the “3Rs” (reduce, reuse, and recycle), such as the 3-Kiri (all or no more) Action (full use of food ingredients, no leftovers, draining kitchen garbage of liquids) and My Bag Campaign (reduction in plastic shopping bags, wasted packages, and containers). Yet, we need to further reduce waste to achieve the target set in the Basic Plan, which is “up to 970 g of daily waste per person.” To that end, we will promote activities for further reduction based on suggestions derived through the effective use of data and ICT.

1.Aging society, elderly care, medical, health care
Higher quality of life for the elderly
With the aging population, improvement of senior citizens’ quality of life is becoming an important issue for society as a whole.
Creating environments in which the elderly can live active and vibrant lives could result in a better quality of life for both the elderly and their families, as well as for younger generations. We are looking for useful ideas and suggestions derived through effective use of data to improve the quality of life for elderly citizens.

Promoting health of citizens through walking
An increase in lifestyle-related diseases, people in need of nursing care, lack of physical activity among adults, and overweight children—we have been tackling these recent health problems by promoting fitness habits. Among them, the city has been promoting walking by making useful maps available. Unfortunately, walking is practiced only by a part of the population, mainly older adults. We are looking for ideas or apps that help people acquire the habit of walking and simultaneously feel joy and ease; eventually, we hope to see an increase in those who walk by promoting fitness habits.
