Admission Guidelines for Overseas Students


 

I. For Entry into the College of Arts and Sciences

 

 

 

1. For Monbukagakusho Scholarship Students

 

 

 

 

Recruitment is carried through overseas Japanese embassies, education ministries in each country, and universities. The method of recruitment varies from country to country. Applicants are selected through a document review, interview and written test conducted at Japanese embassies. Successful candidates are provided with one year of preparatory training in Japan, after which they are enrolled in a university chosen by the selection committee of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). For details, please inquire at the competent government ministry (e.g., ministry of education) or the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country.

 

 

 

 

2. For Privately Financed Students

 

 

 

 

(1) Using the same selection procedure as Japanese students

 

 

 

In this two-step procedure, one must first take the examination administered by "National Center for University Entrance Examination [Daigaku-Nyushi-Center-Shiken]; those who pass, then take a second entrance exam administered by the university.

Regarding the second entrance exam: Write to the university's Admissions Division at 7-3-1 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, Japan 113-8654 or call them at 03-5841-2083.

 

 

 

 

 

 

(2) Special selection procedure for graduates of overseas high schools (foreigners who do not have permanent visa status)

 

 

 

Selection is conducted through a document review, scores on the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) and TOEFL, an essay, and an interview.

Regarding the EJU exam: Write to the Testing Division, Programs and Activities Department of the Japan Student Services Organizaton (JASSO) at 4-5-29 Komaba, Meguro-ku, Tokyo, Japan 153-8503 or call them at 03-5454-5338.

2)

Regarding the "Special Class-1 Screening Test (for foreign students not permitted to domicile permanently in Japan): Write to the Admissions Division, the University of Tokyo at 7-3-1 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, Japan 113-8654 or call them at 03-5841-2084.

 

 

 

 

II. For Entry into the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

 

 

 

 

 

1. For Entry into Master's and Doctoral (latter half) Programs

 

 

 

Selection is carried out using the same procedure as with Japanese students. Calls for applications are issued by Graduate School Office (Section 1). Direct your inquiries to this office.

 

 

 

 

 

2. To Enroll as a Research Student in the Graduate School

 

 

 

To be eligible, a person must be a citizen of a country other than Japan. The student conducts research for an extendable period of six months under the guidance of an academic supervisor.

Regular selection procedure for graduate students: There is no difference in the procedure for Japanese students and overseas students, whether on government scholarships or self-supported.
However, those wishing to enter the graduate school as a research student under a Monbukagakusho scholarship must fill out an application at a Japanese embassy, which forwards it to MEXT.
Recruitments for government scholarships are carried out by Japanese embassies, ministries of education in each country, and universities, so please address inquiries to such embassies or ministries.

Students admitted through this procedure are required to take the regular graduate entrance exam after a tenure of one half or one full year as a research student.
