AIKOM students are selected from universities and colleges with which the University of Tokyo has a formal exchange agreement. The program currently accepts 28 students from 23 universities. We also send approximately the same number of Komaba students to our partner schools each year.

To be eligible, applicants must be full-time third or fourth year students at one of these partner universities during the period of the program. Though a knowledge of Japanese language is not necessarily required, students, including those who are from countries where English is not the main language, should have sufficient English proficiency (TOEFL 550PBT/213CBT/80iBT or more). Criteria for selection include academic excellence, seriousness of purpose, and commitment to international educational exchange.

The partner universities send a short list of candidates with their application forms by the end of March each year. On the basis of the application materials the University of Tokyo makes the final selection, and then recommends the selected students to the Japan Student Services Organization(JASSO) for scholarship assistance.
