Summer Internship Program for Foreign PhD Students by the Global COE on “Medical System Innovation through Multidisciplinary Integration (CMSI)”

July-August, 2012
Request for applications are now being accepted for the 2012 Summer Internship Program for PhD Students to the Global COE Program, Center for Medical System Innovation through Multidisciplinary Integration (CMSI) at the University of Tokyo.

The purpose of the program is to provide participants with biomedical research experience in the basic and translational sciences. Research projects are submitted by faculty members who belong to the CMSI and will reflect ongoing research efforts in the laboratories. Individuals selected for the program will actively participate in ongoing research activities. At the end of their summer experience, students will submit their research data in journal article format. “End of the Program Presentation” is also planned to provide opportunity for the participating PhD students to present their results to a group of supervisors and graduate students participating in the Global COE. During the two months period, participating students will be afforded the opportunity to acquire research skills and, through participation in institutional seminars and lectures, receive information that will be valuable in assessing their career goals related to basic and translational research.

  • Curriculum :
Each student selected for the program is given an opportunity to conduct a research project in one of the biomedical science and technology disciplines under the guidance of a full-time member of the Graduate Schools of Engineering, Medicine, and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Emphasis is placed on the importance of the basic principles that form the foundation for scientific investigation. Students will also be introduced to the application of the scientific findings.
The program is tentatively set to start July 3 (Monday) and to conclude August 31 (Friday). “End of the Program Presentation” by the participating students and their mentors is planned to be held in the final week of the program.
During the program, students work in the laboratories in the University of Tokyo five days a week, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The majority of this time is spent in research activities in a laboratory. The laboratory experiences are supplemented by seminars on a wide variety of research topics, though such activities might be less frequent during the period.
